Our Story
Set right on the sand of Bara Beach in Tanjung Bira, Bara Cabana Hotel is a small, German-managed hotel — eight rooms in three types. We opened our doors to share this beautiful stretch of coastline with travellers looking for a relaxed, good-value place to stay.
Each of our rooms is kept simple and comfortable — air conditioning that is genuinely cold, hot water from a 30-litre tank, and a furnished patio or terrace outside your door — so you can spend your time enjoying the beach and the sunsets rather than a room full of things you did not ask for.
Where the Name Comes From
Bara is the beach in front of us. Wide, white, and quiet, with warungs selling coffee a short walk along the sand.
Cabana comes from further away. Years ago our father took us to a small place on the coast of Sri Lanka. He talked about it for the rest of his life — not really about the rooms, or even the beach, but about the man who ran it, whom he called the Cabana Chief.
He is no longer with us. The name is for him.
Our Philosophy
At Bara Cabana, we believe a great stay doesn't need to be complicated. It's a comfortable room, a friendly welcome, and the Flores Sea right outside your door. We keep things simple so you can enjoy what really matters — the beach, the sunsets, and Tanjung Bira itself.

How It Is Run
We took the hotel over in 2025 and rebuilt it from the inside, replacing essentially every in-room fitting. Bara Cabana is German-owned and managed, and run day to day by the team above. In practice that mostly means things you would hope are boring. The air conditioning is serviced on a schedule rather than when it fails. There is hot water in every room from its own tank. If you message us during reception hours you get an answer within half an hour. If you arrive at midnight, somebody has already worked out how you get into your room.
Why Bira
Bira is not on the way to anywhere. There is no strip, no beach-club circuit, no queue for a photograph. It takes about five hours from Makassar and most people who come here have decided to come here. What there is: a coastline of white sand and limestone, a working boatyard down the road at Tana Beru where phinisi schooners are still built by hand, and a community small enough that people remember you. A surprising number of guests come back — some for a second week, some for a second year.
